From Feb. 1 to 5, sex, gender and wellness will be in the spotlight as Sexual and Gender Wellness Week returns to the University of Calgary for the fifth year in a row.

The program, back by popular demand, is an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to explore all things sex-related.

Sexual and Gender Wellness Week features interactive displays, a carnival, movie screenings and theatrical performances, as well as seminars and workshops on topics as diverse as: Orgasm FUNdamentals, BDSM 101, Trans 101, Alphabet Soup, Healthy Relationships, Sex Toys 101, and more.

Program creates space where students can openly discuss sex and sexuality

"Sex Week plays an important role in providing a space where students can openly discuss and engage with many topics surrounding sex and gender-related issues," says Kirsty McGowan, Student’s Union vice-president (student life). "There is such a wide variety of events, workshops and film screenings during the week that there is something that would interest each and every student.”

Scheduled programs are aimed at providing honest, open and correct information on sex and sexuality, and to make it available to students on campus who may not have had access to a comprehensive education on sexuality during high school. With so much misinformation out there, Sexual and Gender Wellness Week is an important event for those looking for information about sensitive subjects.

In addition to workshops surrounding sexuality, students are also encouraged to utilize the many health-related resources available both on, and off, campus. The SU Wellness Centre reminds students that they can visit their health services providers if they have any concerns with regards to sexual health.

SU Wellness Centre offers sexual health services on campus

“We want to remind students that sexuality is a part of campus life, an important part, and that students can be proactive in utilizing the services on campus," says Russell Thomson, health promotion co-ordinator. "The SU Wellness Centre's sexual health services include STI screening, contraceptive information, Pap testing and more, which students can find out more about on our website or access by booking an appointment.”

The University of Calgary’s SU Wellness Centre, Q CentreWomen’s Resource Centre and the Students’ Union jointly organize Sexual and Gender Wellness Week. The entire campus community is invited to participate in all of the events, seminars and workshops held throughout the week.
