More than 12,000 potential students and their family members flocked to campus Oct. 28 for the University of Calgary’s biggest Open House to date.

This was a 40 per cent increase over last year, a huge milestone for UCalgary and a promising sign of the university’s growth. The event also expanded to include Hunter Student Commons, allowing event-goers to explore one of our newest buildings on campus.

“It was wonderful to see our university community come together to put on the largest open house we have ever hosted,” says Dr. Penny Werthner, UCalgary’s interim provost and vice-president (academic), calling the event a great success. “We are looking forward to seeing open house attendees return in the future as students at UCalgary.”

The open house also attracted international students from 24 countries, as well as many attendees who travelled cross-country from six provinces.

Without the help of key partners such as UCalgary's faculties, student service units, the bookstore and facilities, the event would not have been so successful, says Assistant Registrar for Student Recruitment and Applicant Relations Steven Kelly.

“The University of Calgary’s Open House is a critical event to support the recruitment of prospective students to meet UCalgary’s enrolment targets annually,” Kelly says. “The Student Recruitment Team is grateful to the entire UCalgary community who went above and beyond to make this year a record-breaking event.”

Future students and their families were able to participate in Discovery Sessions which included sample lectures, student service initiatives and more. Opportunities were also available to tour campus and to engage directly with exhibitors and learn more about university program offerings at the Faculty Exhibition Hall in the Jack Simpson Gym and learn about student services, student experiences, admissions and student financial supports in the Hunter Student Commons.

If you missed Open House and would like more information, or want to participate in a tour or other upcoming future student events, you can find details on the website.
