Year in review: the Jarislowsky Fellowship in Business Management
The Jarislowsky Fellowship in Business Management started at Haskayne in 2006 and has been connecting senior-level professionals with business students ever since. The fellowship is now delivered under the umbrella of the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business (CCAL) at Haskayne, which further enhances leadership development offerings through the centre.
Jarislowsky co-fellows Catherine Bell and John Brussa hosted a dinner and discussion, participated in three Lunch with Leaders sessions where they engaged Haskayne graduate students in discussions surrounding leadership over lunch. They also hosted two events that exposed students to a holistic perspective on business through community involvement, appreciation of the arts, international culture, religion, politics and diversity through unique contexts.
The Jarislowsky Dinner and Discussion Series
Graduate students at Haskayne had the opportunity to connect with the co-fellows at the Jarislowsky Dinner and Discussion Series held in the fall semester. Co-fellows John Brussa and Catherine Bell hosted students, alumni, faculty, and industry for a discussion around the theme of “Your Presence is Your Power: Leadership Presence and Style”. The evening included a panel with the Jarislowsky Fellows, Dr. Nick Turner - CCAL’s Distinguished Research Chair, Peter McCoppin – executive coach, keynote speaker, international orchestral conductor, national host/broadcaster, and moderator Loren Falkenberg. You can read more about this event here.
Art in Leadership
The Art in Leadership event brought students, the co-fellows, and members of CCAL together for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Glenbow Museum. Select leadership portraits were highlighted from the Glenbow’s collection of art, representing the evolution of portraits and how the definition of a leader has changed throughout history. Ranging from political figures to hockey players, the diversity in subjects illustrated how the notion of who we consider to be a leader continues to evolve over time.
Sports and Leadership
Guests were invited to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame to explore the analogy between sports and business, and how leadership mechanisms unique to a sports context can be adopted into a business setting.
The evening included an all-star line-up: co-fellows Catherine Bell and John Bruss, Kirk Lamb, chairman and president for the Canadian Junior Hockey League, Dr. Cari Din, Olympic silver medalist and leadership faculty from Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary and Shawnee Harle, assistant coach for the Canadian women’s basketball team and two-time Olympian. The group discussed leadership style in sport and its application to business.
Thank you to Catherine and John for their dedication to leadership and Haskayne students. Stay tuned for more information about the next Jarislowsky Dinner and Discussion Series event happening this fall! Contact leadership@haskayne.ucalgary.ca for more information.
