Whyte Museum: Applications to the Lillian Agnes Jones Fellowship are now open

In 2001, the Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation/Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies received a bequest from the estate of Lillian Agnes Jones. The Lillian Agnes Jones Fellowship was established “for study and research related to the history of Western Canada.” Initially administered as a graduate student scholarship through the University of Calgary, it was realigned in 2019 to be administered through the Whyte Museum, with an open call for scholarly residency proposals across Canada. 

Lillian Agnes Jones (1909-2000) was a cousin to Peter Whyte, who alongside Catharine Robb Whyte, were the founders of the Whyte Museum. Lillian’s mother, Elizabeth Jane, was the sister of Peter’s father, Dave White. Elizabeth Jane and her husband Clifford Jones moved to Calgary in 1900. They had nine children, including their daughter Lillian Agnes. Lillian was educated at the University of Alberta and University of Washington State, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Library Science. She was Head Librarian for Cal Standard Oil Company in Calgary, and was a member of the University Women’s Club. 

A call for applications for the 2020/21 Lillian Agnes Jones Fellowship will commence July 23, 2020 with a deadline of September 15, 2020. We welcome proposals that utilize the collections and resources of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. Successful applicants will be expected to carry out their research at the Whyte Museum’s collections for a minimum of one (1) month to a maximum of three (3) months, between November 3, 2020 and March 15, 2021. Up to two recipients may be awarded the fellowship of $6000 CAD each. 

The intention is to foster and facilitate original research on Western Canada resulting in publication or other distribution of the results and analysis of the research through traditional (print) or non-traditional platforms such as an exhibition, digital, video, podcast, and on-line media. Fellowship proposals are not limited to, but may align with exhibitions and/or publishing activities that the Whyte Museum has established and that coincide with its program plans. 

The application must include the following: 

1. A project proposal (approx. 1,000 words), which outlines the subject, originality of the research, its foundation in the history of the Canadian Rockies, the Whyte Museum’s collections, and the applicant’s scholarly abilities to address the subject. 
2. Curriculum Vitae.
3. One sample of written work (15 - 20 pages maximum). 

These first three components must be gathered in one PDF document. 

1. One letter of recommendation from someone in a position to characterize the applicant’s scholarly abilities. (The letter should be emailed directly to researchfellow@whyte.org by the referee before the application deadline. Please include: Reference for Whyte Museum 2020 Fellowship Applicant (full name of applicant) in the email subject line). 
2. Provide a detailed timeline that identifies scheduled activities for the research project. 
3. A budget of estimated expenditures. If applicable, include other sources of funding for the project. 

SUBMISSIONS 

Applications must be sent to researchfellow@whyte.org no later than the revised deadline of October 15, 2020 by 5:00 pm MDT. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the application is submitted in full as requested - incomplete applications will be disqualified. 

ELIGIBILITY 

Proposals from graduate level students, academics and recognized discipline experts will be encouraged. Writers with a recognized publishing record may also make application to the fellowship program. 

Employees of and volunteers working with the Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation or the Whyte Museum are not eligible. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. 

Research must take place in Banff, Canada at the Whyte Museum for a minimum period of one month to a maximum of three months, between November 3, 2020 and March 15, 2021. Dates of residency will be established in dialogue with the Whyte Museum. During residency, the scholars are expected to devote full time to their research projects. Research Fellows are expected to pay economy travel and food related costs. Shared accommodation can be provided by the Whyte Museum at a nominal cost of 

$400.00 per month. The fellowship stipend is intended to offset these costs. Fellows will be provided with a workspace at the Whyte Museum (equipped with wireless internet access) and will be offered access to archives, library, art and heritage collection materials. 

SELECTION PROCESS 

All proposals will be reviewed by a team of internal and external assessors which may include Donna Livingstone, (CEO); Anne Ewen (Curator of Art and Heritage); Elizabeth Kundert-Cameron (Head Archives and Special Collections Library); Lindsay Stokalko (Reference Archivist/Librarian) as well as one recognized academic, writer or curator. Recommendations will be made to the CEO for further review and final approval. 

PRODUCT 

The research should be original, expand the understanding, and contribute to the awareness of the topic. The outcome irrespective of format should conform to university and museum standards of scholarship. The research should utilize, as much as practical, the archives, library, art and heritage materials within the Whyte Museum but may utilize materials from other sources. The study and research could result in a published essay, manuscript for a book, monograph, or similar form of writing, or a product using another platform such as an exhibition, podcast, performance or video. 

Scholars are expected to submit a final report on their research or work before March 31, 2021. 

COPYRIGHT, USE OF PRODUCT AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT 

Pursuant to Canadian copyright legislation, the scholar will retain copyright and moral rights with respect to any product resulting from the research and study. Any publication, display or dissemination of the product or any portion thereof must acknowledge the Lillian Agnes Jones Fellowship and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in the manner specified by the Whyte Museum. 

USE OF PRODUCT BY MUSEUM 

The Whyte Museum shall have the right, without restriction, to print, display, present, sell or otherwise use all or any portion of the final product developed during the residency pursuant to the signed agreement and with proper attribution to the scholar. 

OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS 

The scholar shall be required to make a public presentation and/or an article in the Whyte Museum’s newsletter The Cairn, pertaining to their research. 

The Whyte Museum shall have no obligation to use, publish or disseminate any materials related to the research or the product therefrom. The Lillian Agnes Jones Fellowship must be acknowledged in works emanating from research accomplished through the fellowship. 

FORMAL AGREEMENT WITH SCHOLAR 

The complete terms and rights of, and obligations under, the Lillian Agnes Jones Fellowship shall be set forth in a formal agreement between the Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation and the scholar. 

AMENDMENT OF TERMS 

The Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation may amend these terms from time to time, as it deems necessary to fulfill the purpose of the Lillian Agnes Jones Fellowship. 

STIPEND 

The Lillian Agnes Jones Fellowship: $6,000 CAD stipend for travel, research, and other expenses. First instalment ($3,000 CAD) to be paid upon signing of a Letter of Agreement detailing terms and conditions. Second instalment ($3,000 CAD) to be paid after approval of the final report on their research or work, which must be submitted before March 31, 2021. There may be up to two (2) fellowship recipients per calendar year. The Whyte Museum can provide subsidized shared accommodation while the scholar is in Banff conducting research at a nominal cost of $400.00 per month. The fellowship stipend is intended to offset these costs.
