Welcome (back) to the Department of Art
Welcome (back) to the Department of Art
The start of this academic year will be a new experience for everyone. Whether you’re a student starting or continuing your degree program, whether you’re faculty or staff, we’re all in this together. By being kind, patient and flexible, we can create a community of caring as we navigate these new and ever-changing circumstances together.
Safety is our number one priority and the university and the Department of Art have developed some procedures to keep everyone safe. Please read through this communication carefully and don’t hesitate to contact us at artdept@ucalgary.ca with questions.

This fall, the Department of Art will offer:
- in-person courses on campus
- online courses
- combined in-person and online courses
If you’re enrolled in a course that requires you to come to campus, please make sure you follow the UCalgary COVID-19 protocols. Check this webpage often, as the protocols are being updated as new information becomes available. Please stay home if you don’t have to be on campus! The onus is on all of us to prevent COVID-19 from spreading and keep our community safe.
Here are a few key points or you can check the COVID-19 safety guide for students on campus:
- Face covering protocols: everyone is required to wear face coverings in all UCalgary indoor public areas such as hallways, washrooms, and elevators. In classrooms, students can remove face coverings once seated or once they are in their designated space, as long as they maintain a two-metre distance from others. Drama and Dance courses may have course-specific requirements regarding face coverings and distancing; please make sure to consult your course outline for this information.
- Maintain a physical distance of 2 metres from other people.
- Regularly wash your hands and use hand sanitizer. While there are many hand sanitizer stations on campus, we encourage you to carry sanitizer as well.
- Follow all signage
- COVID-19 procedure for sick students: do not come to campus if you are sick or symptomatic and contact your instructor asap.
- If you traveled internationally, you must quarantine for 14 days.

Specific protocols in the Department of Art
Main office
- The main art office (AB 612) will remain closed. You can contact us by email.
- All assignments have to be submitted to your instructor electronically, unless otherwise indicated in the course outlines.
- All meetings will take place online; there will be no face-to-face meetings between students and their instructors, with the exception of work during on-campus labs.
Gallery and other space bookings**
- Gallery Bookings can be arranged through Samantha Charette, Gallery Coordinator.
- The Photo Studio may be booked by qualified users through Kevin Jordan, Photo Technician.
- Other temporary space requests may be addressed to Steven Nunoda, Workshop Technician
**Please note: It is your responsibility to wipe high touch areas (keypad, door handle, light switches, equipment handles and work surfaces etc.) in booked rooms before and after use (sanitizing wipes will be available).
Around campus
- In order to discourage gatherings on campus, the lounge space on the 6th floor of the Art Building is closed. If you have to be on campus in between classes, there is a study area in classroom AB 672 (limited capacity), and there are limited computers and study spaces available in TFDL that must be booked. You can also use the outdoor patio (weather permitting) on the 6th floor of the Art Building, as long as you maintain a physical distance of 2m from others.
- Food options: stay tuned for more information
- Water options: bring you own filled water bottle; water fountains in the Art Building are closed.
Thanks for helping us in creating a community of caring within the Department of Art!
