University raises more than $354,000 for United Way

A message from the United Way Co-chairs

We did it.

We set the bar high with a very ambitious goal of raising $350,000 for our 2012 United Way campus campaign, and we are excited to announce that we have reached that goal, raising more than $354,000 for the United Way of Calgary and Area!

This is a tremendous accomplishment that could not have been achieved without your support. We have demonstrated our capacity to give where it counts and make a significant impact to those in need in our community. It has truly been a pleasure to see such generosity and dedication throughout this year’s campaign. Your hard work has once again exceeded our expectations and we have made achievements this year that we can truly be proud of.

Here’s a quick look back at our 2012 campaign successes:

Long before we even kicked-off the campaign, our Dinos athletes bared their brawn by winning the first annual United Way Plane Pull in June, lugging a 180,000 pound UPS Airbus A300 over 50 feet in 16.65 seconds. That victory was followed by another in the fall, when our first-year students raised more than $4,000 through Bling Bling, the annual fundraising campaign held during orientation.

The ever-popular Stair Climb and Chillin’ for Charity returned this year to even greater success.
Twenty-three teams participated in this year’s Stair Climb (last year was 18) raising more than $43,000, while Chillin’ for Charity – organized by Haskayne School of Business’ JDC (Jeux de Commerce) West group – raised more than $7,500.

We also tip our hats to our campus achievers—the Faculty of Arts for having the highest faculty pledge amount of $41,909; and the Haskayne School of Business won double honours with both the highest faculty participation rate (63 per cent) and the most money raised from events ($12,149). With their astounding participation rate, the Haskayne School of Business takes home the coveted United Way Challenge Cup for 2012, where it will proudly remain with them until the next United Way campaign.

Most importantly, we would like to thank all faculty and staff who made pledge donations, participated in events, and solicited their fellow colleagues for support. We would also like to thank our students for showing their leadership and philanthropic spirit by climbing stairs, braving chilly waters and being part of another amazing campaign.

On behalf of the United Way Steering Committee and Cabinet, the University of Calgary and the campus community and beyond, thank you for the difference you have made to our city through the United Way. And thank you for what you do on campus every day and what you to do to make the University of Calgary an institution we can all be proud of.

A happy 2013 to you all.
