University of Calgary Students Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with Music, Mooncakes, and Cultural Fun
The event began with a short presentation introducing the origins and legends of the Mid-Autumn Festival, including the famous story of Chang’e and Hou Yi. Students learned about the festival’s symbolism of reunion and gratitude through visuals and storytelling, deepening their appreciation for Chinese cultural traditions.
After the presentation, participants took part in lively riddle-guessing and trivia activities that encouraged them to use Mandarin while having fun. The room was filled with laughter as students competed, and winners received small prizes for their participation.
The celebration reached a joyful peak when everyone joined together to sing 《月亮代表我的心》(“The Moon Represents My Heart”), blending music, language, and cultural appreciation in a memorable way.
Guests also enjoyed mooncakes and light snacks, adding a festive touch to the afternoon. Sharing food together symbolized the unity and warmth that the Mid-Autumn Festival represents being together under one moon.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Cai encouraged students to continue learning Mandarin and to embrace every opportunity to immerse themselves in Chinese culture. The event concluded on a cheerful note, leaving participants inspired, connected, and more deeply engaged in their learning journey.
