UCalgary Nursing recipients of King Charles III Coronation Medals

Meet the members in our faculty who received this honour for their advocacy and contributions to Canada

In recognition of their significant contributions to Canada, individuals from the Faculty of Nursing have been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal. 

Fourth-year nursing student Brooklyn Rhead received her medal in a ceremony in November 2024 recognizing her diabetes advocacy work. Brooklyn was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2020 and says her diagnosis was a deciding factor in her choosing nursing as a career.

In Feb 2025, Zahra Shajani, associate dean, undergraduate programs, received her medal for her work as president of the Ismaili Council of the Prairies and chairman for the Aga Khan Health Board. She has been a dedicated advocate for health promotion, illness and injury prevention, with a focus on diverse individuals and families, especially those with young children and varying socio-economic backgrounds.

Kidney Foundation Canada

Last month, former nursing dean and UCalgary provost and vice-president (academic) Sandra Davidson was recognized for her remarkable achievement and dedication to the kidney cause at a ceremony hosted by the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Southern Alberta Branch. Since 2000, Sandra has been a KFOC volunteer leader at local, regional, and national levels, advocating for kidney health, research, and organ donation. A nurse and health-care leader, she is also a living kidney donor.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The King Charles III’s Coronation Medal was created to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III in 2023. The outstanding individuals who receive one of the 30,000 medals to be given out in Canada have made a significant contribution to our country, its regions, or its communities.
