UCalgary mourns Iran plane crash victims killed one year ago

Two alumni among 63 Canadians who died when Boeing 737 crashed en route to Ukraine

The University of Calgary campus flag was lowered today as Canada mourns the deaths one year ago of 176 victims, including 63 Canadians, who were passengers onboard a Boeing 737 that crashed Jan. 8, 2020 after takeoff from Tehran International Airport.

University of Calgary alumni Marzieh Foroutan, MSc’17, a student at the University of Waterloo, and Shadi Jamshidi, MEng’14, a technical sales representative from Mississauga, were among the victims.

The University of Calgary expresses its condolences to the families and friends of the two alumni, and to members of Calgary’s Iranian community, including the university’s Iranian students. The University of Calgary also expresses its support for members of the University of Alberta community who were killed in in the crash. An estimated 30 Edmontonians died, many who had ties with UAlberta.
