Trainee-led organization building community

LCITO seeks to improve experience of Libin trainees

The Libin Cardiovascular Trainee Organization (LCITO) brings together the institute’s graduate students with the aim of improving their educational experience.

Developed three years ago by student leaders, the LCITO is helping create a community amongst Libin trainees working on their masters, PhDs, postdocs and clinical training programs.

“It’s fun to be part of the LCITO,” says Jessica Wager, who served as the group’s president for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years. “It’s important for building community amongst trainees who tend to become isolated working in smaller labs located in different areas of the campus.”

The LCITO is comprised of student volunteers. They organize educational, career development and social events, ranging from journal clubs to an annual meet and greet to career development sessions, on a limited budget.

The group also hosts a summer student research day, takes part in planning the Libin Institute’s annual Tine Haworth Research Day and acts as a student spokesperson within the institute.

Wager, a doctoral student in the basic science lab of Dr. Jennifer Thompson, PhD, says the group has helped her feel a part of the Libin community.

“Grad school has a lot of ups and downs, so it’s nice for people to connect with others going through the same things,” says Wager. “Networking with others and finding things in common might also help you with your research.”

Carmina Albertine Isidoro, who is pursuing her PhD in the basic science lab of Dr. Justin Deniset, PhD, has served on the LCITO for two years, most recently as vice president.

She says the LCITO not only helps create a community, but members of the group learn a lot of skills, such as leadership, time management, event organization and meeting management, that are likely to be useful in future careers.

Isidoro enjoys being part of the LCITO team and notes she got involved to be an advocate for her student colleagues.

“It’s important to have a student voice within the greater Libin community,” she says.

Investing in the Next Generation of Heart Health Leaders

The Libin Cardiovascular Trainee Organization (LCITO) is driven by passionate graduate students who volunteer their time to build community, foster collaboration, and grow as future leaders in cardiovascular research and care.

With limited resources, LCITO organizes professional development events, hosts student-led research days, and ensures trainees have a voice within the Institute.

Your support can help LCITO expand its efforts—helping empower students to thrive in and beyond the lab.

Consider supporting the future of cardiovascular research by investing in our trainees.
