On the afternoon of March 16, there were 40 students filled with fun and enthusiasm to learn the art of calligraphy for the ninth iteration of the perennially well-attended calligraphy event.

The introduction by our professor, Akiko Sharp sensei, focused on the cultural and historical significance of calligraphy as a form of art in Japan. Then, the professional calligrapher Mami Humphey sensei instructed the students on how to hold the calligraphy brush correctly and showed the characters for the spring scenery (春光) in the various calligraphy styles displayed in the presentation.

Several pupils discovered for the first time how calligraphy had developed into its present
state, branching into two distinct styles, one closely approaching the original philosophy of
the art form and the other fusing traditional technique with a contemporary theatrical focus.

We highly appreciated Professor Sharp sensei, and ten students from Hokkaido University of Education gladly provided close support. In contrast, Mami sensei demonstrated and gave instructions on how to write simple strokes.

Ultimately, many students' initial shyness turned into a desire to study further. Numerous
people thanked the Japanese language department and indicated their desire to attend
further activities. All of the students took their work home as the event came to a close. We
can't wait to watch how each student's passions grow. We will have more opportunities to
promote Japanese culture and for our Japanese enthusiasts.
