Think Ink 10 - Calligraphy Event with Professional Calligrapher Mami Humphreys

On a cozy afternoon on March 12, 30 students were filled with fun and enthusiasm to learn the art of Japanese calligraphy at Think Ink 10.

At the University of Calgary, the Japanese Department has always committed to developing its experience to reflect Japanese culture more thoroughly. The department attempts to deliver students with diverse cultural backgrounds as global cultures grow more interconnected.

On a cozy afternoon on March 12, 30 students were filled with fun and enthusiasm to learn the art of Japanese calligraphy at Think Ink 10. It was a nice time for everyone to enjoy Japanese culture and take a break from their busy life.

We are happy to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Think Ink. We appreciate all the schoolmates who supported us in those ten years, especially our school director, Mr. Mark Conliffe, who also gave a speech to celebrate our event, and our volunteers, Hokkaido University Education (HUE) students; thank you for everyone’s support. Also, I would like to thank you for the Japanese programme. Akiko Sharp sensei arranged the event and invited our club, Japanese Cultural Collectives (JCC), to take part in it. This year, the professional calligrapher Mami Humphreys will give us a calligraphy lesson. This year is the Year of the Dragon, and to commemorate our 10th anniversary, Mami sensei chose the theme ”龍” (Dragon in Kanji) for the theme this year.

The calligraphy character ”龍” is a high-level kanji; according to The Japan Kanji Aptitude Test Foundation, this character is a top-level character and is a leap-level challenge for our participants. Still, the lesson by Mami sensei and the help from Sharp sensei and HUE students make everything easy for our participants.
