It is with sadness that we report the passing of James (Jim) P.M. Waugh, a former faculty member of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (formerly Faculty of Environmental Design).

Jim studied architecture at McGill University and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship for studies at Oxford University. He also received a Canada Council award for further studies at Cambridge University before returning to Alberta where he began teaching at SAPL.  Eventually he moved into full-time professional practice, though he remained a consummate teacher throughout his life. His local architectural legacy lives on through the Calgary Girl Guides Centre as well as Shaw Court.

In 2008, Jim established an endowment for the Waugh Scholarship in Architecture, as an expression of gratitude to his parents, Perry and Mona who instilled in him a high regard for curiosity and learning. He also wanted to acknowledge the benefits he’d received as a recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship and the J.W. McConnell Scholarship at McGill University. The Waugh Scholarship was awarded to students with academic merit in architecture, who demonstrated concern for the welfare of others. Jim felt it was important that students become more capable of advancing their understanding of the relationships between people and the designed environment.

Over the better part of a decade, his generosity provided much needed support to many of our promising students. A voracious reader with a deep love for the great outdoors, Jim was known for showing kindness to everyone he met.

He leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Charlene Prickett, and his beloved daughter Xanna Waugh.

If desired, donations may be made in memory of Jim to the Best Waugh Resident Award in Distributed Learning and Rural Initiatives (DLRI) at the Cumming School of Medicine.
