Podiatric surgeon sets his sights on helping diabetes patients prevent complications

Dr. Karim Manji, DPM, is a podiatric surgeon and researcher at UCalgary. Spearheading the development of the Zivot Limb Preservation Centre, the first centre of excellence in Canada dedicated to treating diabetes-related foot complications including foot ulcers, infections, poor circulation and deformities, the 35-year-old continues to push the Centre forward as its current director.  

Dr. Manji is also clinical assistant professor of surgery at the University of Calgary.

What has been your biggest career highlight to date?

Being promoted to clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine in 2019 in recognition of my academic and leadership accomplishments.

Do you have plans to scale up the Zivot Limb Preservation Centre?

My goal is to help develop limb-preservation teams across Canada to decrease major lower limb amputations, a preventable complication of diabetes.

How has COVID-19 impacted your day-to-day work?

COVID 19 has changed the way we have been able to deliver care in our hospitals and outpatient clinics. We have adapted to the changing circumstances and collaborated with our patients, staff and other stakeholders to continue to deliver a high standard of care for the diabetic foot in Calgary.

What is the most satisfying thing about your job?

Helping patients succeed in preventing a foot ulcer or amputation by early detection, and helping them return to the activities they love to participate in. 

Any advice for students or new grads? 

Experience new things as much as possible.

Why is mentorship important?

Mentorship helps map out a path of success, provides some insight into the potential challenges and opportunities that may come about.
