Content and Rationale of Junior and Senior Preceptors Responding to Residents' Educational Needs Revisited

Luc Côté, MSW, PhD (ed.)
Visiting Professor
Department of Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine
Université Laval, Québec

Thursday, February 12, 2015

12:00-1:00pm

G637 Health Sciences Centre, 3330 Hospital Drive NW, Calgary

Côté & Bordage ( Acad. Med., 2012) conducted a qualitative and correlational study in order to investigate the content and conceptual frameworks of preceptor feedback to residents during case presentations. They found that preceptors’ use of conceptual frameworks while giving feedback to residents was positively associated with a greater diversity of responses and that senior preceptors produced more responses, used more conceptual frameworks, and asked more probing-challenging questions than junior preceptors. More recently, they conducted a new study to further confirm the results obtained with a broader sample. The presentation will be an opportunity to detail what they did and found, and to discuss the impacts for clinical education.
