While the Dinos football team was warming up in advance of their annual matchup with the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Sept. 25, another team was gathering just off the field, celebrating a milestone that will change the future of UCalgary field sports.

Dinos alumni, supporters and community members came together for a special pre-game event to kick off fundraising for a new stadium at the University of Calgary — a fit-for-varsity training, competition and event facility that will serve both campus and community.

“Great sporting cities and universities do not become great by accident — they invest in the places where people come together,” says Dr. Ed McCauley, PhD, UCalgary president and vice-chancellor. “Today, we are bringing to life the vision of a new stadium that will connect young Calgarians with our Dinos athletes, our athletes with our researchers, our students with our community, and our university with Calgarians.”

There's a lot to be excited about, adds Dr. Nick Holt, PhD, dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology. “This is an opportunity to create a true home for sport on campus that will also serve the community — and it's the community that's making it happen.”

Philanthropy and community support key

With more than $23 million already committed through the efforts of the Dinos Fifth Quarter — a dedicated group of Dinos Football alumni — and other university champions, the celebration marked the initiation of accepting philanthropic donations for the stadium initiative.

“The enthusiasm and generosity we’ve seen from these early donors and champions is remarkable,” says Andrea Morris, UCalgary vice-president, Development and Alumni.

“These philanthropic commitments are so much more than financial transactions — it’s a demonstration of their belief in our student-athletes, in the value of sport and recreation to a community, and in future generations. It’s a really powerful show of support, creating both a strong foundation and the momentum to keep going.”

Addressing a citywide shortage of sporting infrastructure

In addition to supporting Dinos football, soccer and rugby, the stadium initiative provides significant opportunities for community use.

“There’s a critical gap in sporting infrastructure here in Calgary and a new stadium here on campus will address that,” says Holt. “By opening our doors to the community during evenings and weekends, we can create more field time for youth and community sport — something leagues across the city have been needing for a very long time.”

Currently in the design phase, the facility is envisioned as a dynamic and future-ready venue with a capacity for more than 5,000 spectators; a seasonal dome for year-round use; upgraded training facilities; modern amenities for a first-class game-day experience; and scalable infrastructure to support future growth. Ideally located for both students and the community, the facility will be well positioned for regional and national sporting competitions, as well as for concerts and events.

The road ahead

Canadian firm GEC Architecture has been selected as the prime consultant for this stage of the proposed project, bringing its extensive expertise in sport and arena design. In the meantime, UCalgary leadership and champions will continue to fundraise and explore other private, corporate and public partnerships, building on the strong foundation of the $23 million in philanthropic commitments already received. While this represents significant momentum, substantial additional investment is still required to bring the stadium to life, with a broader public campaign to come.

“This is just the beginning,” says Morris of the pre-game fundraising kick-off event. “The community is behind this initiative, and we will continue to work with them to make it happen.”

Says Holt: “Truly, this stadium will be a place for everyone: Dinos student-athletes, UCalgary’s 38,000 students, and Calgarians and southern Albertans of all ages and abilities to engage with sport and each other. It’s a win for the entire community.”
