New book release from Dr. Ben McKay

"The Political Economy of Agrarian Extractivism. Lessons From Bolivia", published by Fernwood (2020).

Congratualtions to Dr. Ben McKay on his new book release!

The Political Economy of Agrarian Extractivism. Lessons From Bolivia. By Ben McKay, Assistant Professor of Development and Sustainability in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology. Published by Fernwood (2020).

McKay’s book analyzes the extractive character of so-called ‘industrial’ agriculture, revealing its detrimental socio-economic and socio-ecological implications. Rather than industrializing countryside, the book argues that this agro-food model is better characterized as a mode of extraction, appropriating the economic and ecological value from the regions in which it operates, while exploiting or excluding the rural majority as they become surplus to the needs of capital accumulation. The book uses Bolivia’s soy complex as a case study and is based on research carried out from 2012-2017.
