My First Professional Exhibition, 2021-2022 Award

This annual award of $5000 has been established by Drs. George and Susannah Kurian to enable a graduating BFA (VIST) student to produce a solo exhibition in a professional gallery or institution.

The award allows students to gain knowledge of exhibiting their own work and can be used to cover expenses associated with producing work, gallery rental, catalog production, promotion, and other expenses appropriate for mounting their exhibition.

Eligibility: To be eligible to receive this award students must have completed their final year of a BFA Visual Studies degree and be graduating in the academic year in 2019-2020 or 2020-2021.

Deadline: 4:00 p.m. Friday, Oct 8, 2021 by e-mail submission

Application Process

To apply for this award, the committee requests the following from applicants to be :

  1. A one page (maximum 500 word) artist statement outlining your visual art practice, introducing the theme, content, processes, and possible influences.
  2. A one page (maximum 400 word) statement proposing the exhibition you would like to mount.
  3. A statement (maximum 250 word) that addresses your future interest in the field of art, such as graduate studies, commercial/public/artist-run exhibitions, residencies, etc.
  4. An email attachment with up to twenty images of work created in the past year, of which 5 can be details or alternate views of sculptural/installation work. Format in 200 dpi, maximum 1024 pixels in the largest direction. Alternately, and if appropriate, students can submit a tape of performance or video work, not to exceed fifteen minutes.
  5. A list of visuals that correspond to your submitted portfolio, providing your name, title, medium, size and date.
  6. The names of 2 references that may be contacted for further information.
  7. A curriculum vitae (maximum one page) outlining your awards, exhibitions, any honours, and related employment.

 

Deadline for applications is 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 8, 2021.

All requested materials must be complete and submitted to the administrative assistant Elizabeth Violo at elizabeth.violo@ucalgary.ca by clearly mentioning My First Professional Exhibition. The selection committee will comprise of individuals from Department of Art and Art History exhibit committee.
