The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is saddened to share the passing of Leanne Johnson, BSc’09, a University of Calgary graduate who spent more than a decade supporting medical residents starting their careers in Calgary.

Leanne graduated with the Bachelor of Science in geography and a minor in biology in 2009 and, according to family, "she never really left" the school. After spending time working at Hotel Alma following graduation, she accepted a role in Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) at the CSM in 2012, eventually working her way to registration manager in PGME. The role is responsible for supporting the medical residency matching process, resident re-entries and transfers, visa processing, and much more.

Leanne is remembered for her commitment to process improvement and professional development, building strong relationships with many partners who support doctors at the start of their career and as a mentor to countless colleagues through the years. She took pride in completing her Professional Certificate for Emerging Leaders through UCalgary Continuing Education and was pursuing a Change Management Certificate at the time of her passing.

Leanne was nominated for the Calgary White Hat Awards in 2012, given each year for excellence in hospitality and tourism industry. Known for creativity and always being up for adventure, Leanne bought an RV in 2019, proudly naming it Harvey, and set out on a trip across Canada and the United States.

Memorial Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of The Bells, 2720 Centre St. N., Calgary) on Jan. 9, 2026, at 2:30 p.m.
