It is with sadness that we report the passing of Dr. Don Detomasi, one of the founding faculty members of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape. Don helped shape the early years of the former Faculty of Environmental Design, teaching economics, public policy, and urban planning. He was also our second dean, serving from 1981 until 1989 when he was named associate vice-president (planning).

Don passionately believed in an interdisciplinary, trans-scalar approach to the design of the built and natural environments that transcends the silos of conventional professional practice. This vision continues to shape our school. As we prepare to celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2021, it is important to remember how much we have benefited from, and are indebted to, Don’s hard work and commitment.

In addition to his extensive work in the Faculty of Environmental Design and the greater University of Calgary community, Don and Kaye also established an endowment award, the Detomasi Research Award for International Students. Their generosity has provided much-needed support to the research efforts for several of our international students.

As a token of our respect, in recognition of his significant contribution to our school and University, the flag will be lowered on Sept. 1, 2020 on what would have been Don’s 83rd birthday.
