In Memoriam: Brian Kipling

Brian retired as a Senior Instructor in the Department of Chemistry in the late 1990s

Brian Kipling graduated as an Associate of the Royal Institute of Chemistry (A.R.I.C) in 1958 and was elected to a Fellowship (F.R.I.C.)  in 1972. In the late 1950s Brian also completed the required two years of National Service in the U.K as a sergeant in the British Army and, subsequently, he served in the Royal Army Educational Corps (RAEC). Prior to joining the University of Calgary he carried our research at Leeds University, U.K., on Inorganic Reaction Kinetics in the laboratory of Professor A.G. Sykes leading to an MSc degree. Brian was appointed Demonstrator (a.k.a. Instructor) in the Department of Chemistry in 1968. His primary duties involved the development of the Inorganic Chemistry lab program and lecturing first year courses. Undoubtedly, his experience teaching young soldiers in the RAEC combined with his dry, Yorkshire sense of humour contributed to his success as a teacher of undergraduates. Brian also served as the Administration Office in the Chemistry Department during the 1980s. In the 1970s and early 1980s Instructors were encouraged to carry our research in collaboration with one of the Professors in the department. In that context Brian published several highly cited papers on Nafion ion-exchange membranes in collaboration with Howard Yeager. Brian retired as a Senior Instructor in the late 1990s and moved to Enderby, B.C.

Brian Kipling passed away in Salmon Arm, B.C. on February 6th. He would have been 87 on March 4th.
