Members of Faculty of Nursing fundraise for nursing scholarships in Alberta

Six of our UCalgary Faculty of Nursing community braved the rain and cold on Friday, Sept. 28 to take part in the guided two-kilometre ARNET (Alberta Registered Nurses Educational Trust) Lantern Walk around the Bower Ponds in Red Deer.

This enthusiastic group — Judy Hanson, Claire Mills, Nicole Letourneau, Cynthia Mannion and students Jennifer Bon Bernard and Bikramjit Sekhon — raised $325 for nursing scholarships in Alberta. The team, the Green Lanterns, was named for the army of superheroes, explains Sekhon, a MN thesis student supervised by Letourneau.

“The Green Lanterns have super-powered rings, comprised of different alien races (analogous to our differences in race and gender), who are chosen to defend/police the universe,” he says.

“I feel this was an appropriate analogy to RNs, as being the largest force in health care, because they can make change, advocate for social justice, ensure best practices and accountability and improve service to our fellow humans.”

Next year, the hope is to expand the team and raise more funds.
