As Canada-U.S. trade negotiations take more twists and turns on the road to a new deal, Carlo Dade has been explaining what the latest developments mean for Canadians.

In an article for the Globe and Mail, Dade and co-author Sean Willett, Chief Strategy Officer for research firm Goodbit, examined the challenge of dealing with President Donald Trump whether U.S. tariff pressure could divide Canada. Their research suggests the opposite is true and Canadians may be more willing to work together when they see the stakes clearly.

“As long as the president retains sole discretionary authority to impose tariffs, the threat remains,” Dade and Willett wrote.

Dade, who is also Director of the New North America Institute at the School, joined CBC’ Calgary’s The Eyeopener this week to discuss the negotiations and tariff uncertainty.

"This is far from over,” Dade said of the protracted trade negotiations with the United States. “This is yet another step in our dealing with the Americans, who are who rewriting the rules of global trade.”

Dade also joined CBC Calgary’s The Current this week to discuss the latest developments in Canada-U.S. trade negotiations and the challenges facing Canadian industries.

“We’re unique in that we have a second set of trade negotiations with the Americans while they’re negotiating a new layer on top of that,” Dade said, highlighting the complexity of Canada’s position as it navigates multiple trade discussions with the United States.
