Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation 2024 Emerging Artist Recipient – Nicole Charlton Goodbrand, BA’07
Nicole Charlton Goodbrand, BA’07, a dance alumna and a sessional instructor of the School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), has been honoured as the 2024 Emerging Artist (Dance) by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation. The prestigious award recognizes Goodbrand's exceptional talent, dedication and passion for dance, celebrating her outstanding contributions to the arts.
“I am delighted and honoured to be one of the emerging artists receiving this award and I am grateful to the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation for championing Alberta artists and for investing in the ongoing development of prairie artists who contribute to the unique fabric that makes up this province. Once I decided to study dance as a vocation at the University of Calgary in the Division of Dance, I found that through training, performance, and research, and working closely with SCPA professors Melissa Monteros, Wojciech Mochniej, Davida Monk, and Anne Flynn, I was able to build the skills needed to enhance my practice and develop my artistic voice by cultivating a multitude of tools that promoted investigation, artistic rigor, and creative maturity. Now, teaching as sessional instructor in the Division of Dance, feels very full circle and is a profound privilege.”
A Calgary-based contemporary dance artist, choreographer, and educator, Goodbrand explores human behavior and personal realities through movement and performance art. She performs locally, nationally, and internationally with Alberta-based dance companies, interprets with W&M Physical Theatre, and serves as Artistic Associate of WM2. Nicole also educates dancers, including at the University of Calgary’s School of Creative and Performing Arts. With a BA in Dance from the University of Calgary, a BA graduate diploma from The School of Alberta Ballet, and a teaching certificate from the Royal Academy of Dance (Berlin), she has received grants like the Canada Council for the Arts' Professional Development Grant and Alberta Foundation for the Arts' Individual Project Grant in 2023, among others.
