Hidden distractions in your study space

How to set up your study space to maximize productivity

Your workspace

Your study desk should be in a quiet part of your home and facing away from clutter. You don’t need to stare at a blank wall, but the space in front of you shouldn't be too messy. A clean, tidy desk reduces visual distractions and makes it easier for your brain to focus.

Your digital workspace matters too! Having a ton of random folders on your desktop makes navigating important files harder, so keep it clean.

Your clothes

What you wear actually affects how you feel and perform. Being comfortable is important, but being too comfortable, like in your pajamas, can make you relaxed and less alert. Putting on casual day clothes or even dressing up a little if that boosts your mood, can help you feel more productive.

Lighting

Bright, cool-toned lighting helps you stay alert and focused, while dim, warm lighting can make you sleepy. Making sure your space is well-lit can make a huge difference in your productivity. Poor lighting is also bad for your eyes, so make sure your workspace is bright enough.

Music

If you study best in silence, great! But if you're someone who needs music to get into study mode, the type of music you listen to matters. I recommend lo-fi because they have consistent beats that stay in the background, but block out the noise in your head. Avoid music with lyrics as they compete with your brain’s language processing, which can be distracting.

Preparation

Gather your materials before you start studying: your water, notes, textbooks—everything. If you have to keep getting up to find stuff, you’ll be making your brain switch tasks and this will interrupt your focus. Think of it like cooking: before you try a new recipe, you set out your ingredients!

Breaks and posture

Taking short, regular breaks (every 30–60 minutes) is actually proven to help you focus better when you return. Get up, stretch, walk around and reset your posture. Poor posture can cause fatigue or discomfort that pulls your attention away from work.

Bonus: Decorate your study space!

Personalize your space and make it a place you actually want to be in.

Good luck to everyone with final exams!
