Appointment effective Dec. 1
Fiona Costello

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Fiona Costello, MD, as the new associate dean, Chairs and Professorships. The appointment is effective as of Dec. 1.

Dr. Costello is a practising neuro-ophthalmologist and a past-president of the Canadian Neurological Society. She is a professor in the departments of Clinical Neurosciences and Surgery at CSM and director of the Roy and Joan Allen Chair in Vision and Visual Sciences at the University of Calgary.

In this role, which is new to the CSM, Dr. Costello will report to the senior associate dean, Research, and assist with the administrative responsibilities of the Research Office. She will be responsible for oversight of the CSM’s endowed chairs and professorships, act as the chair for advisory and selection committee meetings and develop a school-wide strategy for managing and allocating Chairs and Professorships. She may serve as delegate for the senior associate dean where required.

Dr. Costello completed undergraduate studies, medical school and neurology residency training at Memorial University of Newfoundland and followed with a clinical fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Since 2007, she has run a clinical practice in Calgary where she serves patients with disorders involving the visual pathways and the central nervous system. Her work reflects a research focus on the eye as a model for brain disorders including tumours and multiple sclerosis.

Dr. Costello chairs the Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis and is a co-chair with the International Women in Multiple Sclerosis Network. She was named one of Canada’s Top 25 Women of Influence in 2012 and was recognized as a University of Calgary Peak Scholar in 2018. She received a Clinical Teaching Award for the section of Ophthalmology Department of Surgery in June.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Costello on her new appointment.

Sincerely,

Todd Anderson, MD
