Dr. Fareen Zaver

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Fareen Zaver, MD, MSc22, as the new associate dean of the Office of Faculty Development and Performance (OFDP). The appointment took effect Jan. 1, 2024.

Dr. Zaver is an emergency medicine physician and associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine. She has taken over the role previously held by Dr. David Keegan, MD, from July 2015 to Sept. 2023.

Dr. Zaver is well established as a provincial and national leader in faculty development and has most recently been the deputy head of Education for the Department of Emergency Medicine. Her master’s degree in medical education focused on the challenging transition from trainee to unsupervised practice and she has led multiple national curricular changes in this area.

Dr. Zaver has a wealth of experience in designing digitally based solutions and has developed multiple asynchronous curricula (learners access materials at their own pace, usually over longer periods) for education content and mentorship, to encourage innovation and collaboration. Having trained in the United States, she has built an extensive national and international network. As associate dean of OFDP these connections will act as a catalyst for transdisciplinary and multi-office collaborations.

Dr. Zaver has a particular interest in developing faculty programming that responds to the rapid transformation of medicine through technology, big data, precision health and artificial intelligence. She is dedicated to developing a community of faculty leaders across CSM who are empowered to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and anti-oppression initiatives through faculty development initiatives.

Dr. Zaver has received numerous awards recognizing her success as a physician and medical educator including the Postgraduate Medical Education Clinical Preceptor Award, Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40, the Undergraduate Medical Education Faculty Teaching Award, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Robert Maudsley Fellowship for Studies in Medical Education and the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians Top Education Innovation Award.

While not at work, Dr. Zaver loves to follow her taste buds travelling to destinations around the world with her husband and new baby daughter.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Zaver on her appointment with the CSM.

Sincerely,

Todd Anderson, MD
