Dr. Elijah Dixon appointed interim head, Department of Surgery

Appointment effective Nov. 1, 2020

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and Alberta Health Services (AHS) Calgary Zone are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Elijah Dixon, MD, as interim head of the Department of Surgery effective Nov. 1, 2020.

He takes over from Dr. Sean Grondin, MD, who was recently named president of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and will remain a thoracic surgeon at Foothills Medical Centre.

Elijah has been the deputy department head since February 2018, and he has been a member of the department since 2005. He is a professor in the departments of Surgery, Oncology and Community Health Sciences at the CSM.

Elijah is a world leader in hepatobiliary surgery, recognized for his scholarly contributions and service to international hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. He has more than 250 peer-reviewed publications, primarily focused on health services research, clinical trials and improving the quality of cancer surgery. He is active nationally and internationally in clinical and research organizations that develop clinical guidelines and promote surgical research.

Elijah has held a variety of leadership positions, including past president of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons, past president of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and current treasurer-elect of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.
