Department of Art Name Change

Announcement by Denis Gadbois, Head

The Department of Art was created in 1966-67 to train undergraduate and graduate students at the same time the University of Calgary was granted its autonomy in the Province.  With the Department of Art presence, many professionally trained artists have contributed to the art culture of the City of Calgary and established themselves on Canada’s cultural map.

In September 2017, the Department of Art relaunched its BA degree in Art History. The success and interest among the community was immediate and generated a lot of interest in the program.

To recognize this success, the Department of Art unanimously voted in favour of changing its name to the Department of Art and Art History. This was received enthusiastically by the Faculty of Arts and the university community and is approved effective March 1, 2021.

The name change reflects our commitment to Art History which prepares students for careers in curatorial work, museums, arts administration and academia as well as further study in graduate and professional school.
