Decision to postpone spring Calgary Convocation

A message to the campus community from Chancellor Deborah Yedlin
UCalgary Spring Convocation
UCalgary Spring Convocation

Dear Students, faculty and staff,

I am writing to you today to let you know the University of Calgary has made the difficult decision to postpone the spring Calgary Convocation ceremony, originally scheduled June 1-5, until November 2020.

This is a decision that I and the leadership team at UCalgary did not take lightly. As chancellor, celebrating the academic achievements of our students and faculty, together with their families, is a core purpose of the university, as is honouring those who have made significant contributions through their academic, business and community activities. However, given the ongoing COVID-19 situation it was a necessary decision in order to ensure the safety of our community.

Receiving your degree is a significant milestone in life. Now, perhaps more than ever, our community is going to need the creative thinking, problem-solving skills and innovative research methods you have acquired through your studies at UCalgary. The world into which you graduate has changed dramatically from when you started.  But with change comes both challenge and opportunity and we are confident that the Class of 2020 is positioned to make significant contributions in all aspects of society — private, public or not-for-profit.

We are so proud of what you have accomplished during your time with us!  While we will be unable to celebrate in person this Spring, I, along with the leadership team and faculty, will be standing proudly and watching you — the Class of 2020 — apply all you have learned during your time at the University of Calgary in the days, months and years ahead.  We know you will make an impact in whatever career paths you choose, and wherever life takes you.

Please note that although the convocation ceremony itself is postponed, graduates will still receive parchments/degrees in June as planned and we are exploring opportunities for virtual celebrations. Graduates will be emailed details on how their parchments will be distributed to them in May. Further details and specific dates for the convocation ceremony in the fall will be available in May here.

I look forward to celebrating convocation with all of you in November.

Sincerely,
Deborah Yedlin
Chancellor
University of Calgary
