Cooperative Education Program: The what, when and why

Hear about the Haskayne Co-op Program from the inside perspective of co-op students

To get the most learning during a degree, many students find it valuable to have diverse types of opportunities and do more than their in-classroom learning. Some ways to do this include extra-curricular activities, case competitions and networking; however, another great opportunity that students should keep on their radar is the Co-operative Education Program.

Students have the opportunity to gain 12 to 16 months of paid full-time work experience before graduating in their chosen field. The Co-op program provides students with real-world experience and can help them discover many career options.

Mary Frances Teves, fourth year international business student at the Haskayne School of Business has completed two work terms in the Co-op program and was delighted to share and reflect, "Being in the Haskayne Co-op Program was a great experience for me to grow as a student and as a young professional. It was great way to develop skills, network with other professionals, and most of all learn more about myself in regards to narrowing my chosen career path. I made many great mentors, formally and informally, who have been significant in helping me grow to who I have become today”.

Haskayne students are eligible to apply for the Co-operative Education Program once they have completed over 12 courses. The work experience, learning and the connections that Co-op students make during their journey is so valuable to their personal and professional growth.

“The Haskayne Co-op program offers the flexibility for students to work in different offices, capacities, role and industries all while experiencing different corporate cultures. I have been fortunate enough to work with outstanding individuals and have found some great mentors. I feel very fortunate that I have worked and learned from these people as they molded me into the young professional I am and set me up on a successful career path”, says Jacqueline Verwaayen, fourth year Co-op student at Haskayne.

If you are preparing to apply to the Co-operative Education Program many resources are available to Haskayne students at the Haskayne Career Centre: Practice interviews, resume and cover letter assistance and appointments with a career advisor.
