Congratulations Becky Rock, RN

The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine is proud to congratulate Rebecca Rock, RN, on her appointment as President-Elect of the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management (SABM). SABM is an internationally recognized organization dedicated to advancing evidence-based patient blood management practices. This achievement reflects Becky’s exceptional dedication to the field, and her leadership on the national and international stage.

Becky has been a cornerstone of the Calgary Zone Patient Blood Management Program since 2007, serving as the Coordinator and Nurse Clinician. Drawing on more than 30 years of nursing practice across Canada and the United States — spanning trauma, intensive care, nursing education, and clinical leadership — she has helped shape and expand comprehensive perioperative anemia management and blood conservation initiatives across the region. Becky has also contributed to the implementation of the subcutaneous immunoglobulin home infusion program. Most recently, she has returned her full focus to the Calgary Zone PBM Program, where she continues to advance clinician education, patient resources, quality improvement initiatives, and multidisciplinary approaches to perioperative care.

Through her longstanding leadership within SABM, Becky has served on the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Resource Development Workgroup, and Membership Committee, and has lectured for the SABM PBM Certificate Course. She has championed nursing leadership within PBM through manuscript writing and contributions to the PBM Nurse Specialty Scope and Standards of Practice. Her appointment as President-Elect reflects her dedication to improving patient outcomes, and the growing international recognition of the work being undertaken within the Calgary Zone PBM Program and our department.

Her contributions extend well beyond Calgary and SABM. Becky is widely recognized as a passionate advocate for PBM, contributing through invited lectures, educational initiatives, publications, and collaborative work with the Canadian Society for Transfusion Medicine, the Alberta Vein to Vein Society, the Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Society, ImmUnity Canada, and the International Nursing Group for Immunodeficiencies. Most recently, she has successfully applied for ‘PBM Nursing’ to be recognized as an official nursing specialty by the American Nurses Association. Becky is continuing this work with submissions to the Canadian Nursing Association and other international nursing associations to recognize the scope, standards of practice and competencies which she has been instrumental in developing.
