CLARE Graduate Students Conference 2025

"On the Periphery: Quotidian Life Across Borders and Boundaries"

The University of Calgary’s Classics & Religion Departmental Graduate Association is holding its Student conference on February 21st-22nd 2025 at the Nickle Galleries, University of Calgary. The event will commence on Friday, February 21st with a Keynote address by Dr. Rebecca Gilmour (Mount Royal University), presenting her work in bio-archaelogical analysis of Roman skeletal remains. Presentations will be held on Saturday, February 22nd by Undergraduate & Graduate students in disciplines across the sphere of the ‘humanities,’ including approaches that are based on history, ancient literature, & linguistics. The event will conclude with a workshop presented by Dr. Durga Kale (University of Calgary), examining material evidence of pre-colonial maritime trade networks in the Indian Ocean. The workshop will feature a tour of current exhibits at the Nickle Gallery “Earth & Sky: Carpet Cultures of Asia” & “Coins of Islam.”

The theme of our conference examines the everyday social, political, economic & geographic conditions of people living in & between borders & boundaries, both literal & metaphorical. In the humanities, including history, literature, philosophy, religion, & related fields, reflecting on & understanding these conditions in the past allow us to accept & embrace the complexities & importance of those periphery in the present. Our goal is thus to explore people’s existence in & around the edges of society, through an interdisciplinary & intersectional lens, across time & cultural differences.

Registration is available on EventBrite.
