Fully experience Haskayne– both in person and virtual – and develop your leadership
Calling all student! Six ways to get involved with CCAL this year

The Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business (CCAL) is ready for another great year of diverse, evidence-based learning opportunities to practice leadership skills. Interact with world-renowned academics, local and national industry professionals, and fellow students.

After a successful year of working in a near total virtual environment, CCAL is planning on taking advantage of the best of both in-person and virtual worlds! Here are some of the leadership development opportunities you can look forward to this upcoming year.

BMO Mentorship Program at Haskayne School of Business

The BMO Mentorship Program at Haskayne focuses on connecting you with industry professionals to learn leadership development and set yourself apart as you embark on your business degree and career. The program includes six one-on-one meetings between September and April. You can arrange your meetings with your mentor either virtually, in-person or a combination of both. Through the program, you will have access to evidence-based leadership development content to discuss with your mentor. We also invite you to join us as a participant in our research project - Mentoring for Leadership Development!

The mentorship program is open to Haskayne undergraduate students (second year and beyond), all UCalgary undergraduate students who have been registered in the Embedded Certificate in Leadership Studies, Haskayne MBA students and Haskayne Master of Management students.

Applications are open until September 8, 2021:

  • ECLS (Undergraduates registered in the Embedded Certificate in Leadership Studies) – Apply Here

Embedded Certificate in Leadership Studies (ECLS)

Adding this certificate to your degree is a strong step in your business education.  An embedded certificate program focused on developing leadership knowledge, skills, and behaviour, the ECLS explores diverse perspectives in leadership issues, allowing students to build their technical knowledge through discipline-specific studies. Students will learn and practice evidence-based leadership behaviours and participate in mentorship both as a mentor and a mentee. Upon completing the certificate, the student will be able to apply leadership skills in any arena, be it personal, community, or work.

The ECLS is available to any undergraduate student at UCalgary: when completed, the embedded certificate will appear on their official parchment as part of their bachelor’s degree. Click here for more information, or add the certificate to your program through your student centre.

Haskayne Adventure Leadership

The Haskayne Adventure Leadership programs are where leadership learning and adventure meet. Interested in backpacking in the Rocky Mountains? Learning mindfulness meditation? Challenging a field course? CCAL offers a variety of specialized programs to take students beyond the classroom and developing leadership skills in any arena. Haskayne students may choose between for-credit courses and not-for credit programs.

CCAL Peer Network

For those interested in interacting with other students and developing leadership skills, the CCAL Peer Network is a perfect solution. Offered through the SGMA 217 course, Haskayne students can develop a strong foundation in leadership behaviours, focused on creating strong practices and habits to help you in your degree as you work on projects in groups, interact with business professionals and start building out your business network. As part of the SGMA 217 tutorial section, students can join CCAL for three interactive sessions that build your leadership potential and that give Haskayne students a strong start in their business leadership development.

Jarislowsky Fellowship in Business Management

CCAL is proud to provide Haskayne MBA and EMBA students the opportunity to meet and connect with senior industry professionals through its Jarislowsky Fellowship program. The program is based on philanthropist Stephen Jarislowsky’s belief that students can add a depth of understanding through the real-world experiences of professionals and this will help diversify the ways students can learn. This year’s two Jarislowsky Co-Fellows are Heather Culbert and Patrick Lor. They, along with the Calgary business community, will explore and discuss current topics at multiple events over the academic year.

Learning with Leaders

The popular Lunch with Leaders was renamed to Learning with Leaders in 2020.  We changed the name to more accurately reflect what happens within these leadership conversations. It is an opportunity to learn about leadership, from both the leader and from the other students.  Learning with Leaders brings a diverse group of leaders to the table for these conversations – different industries, different leadership perspectives, different leadership contexts – so that students can start to find their own leadership identity through a one-hour Q&A in a small group of 6-8 people. The perspectives of both industry professionals and other students illuminates insights into both the challenges and opportunities of leadership.

Held in an informal small group format, the conversations are intended to be open, unscripted, and dynamic, where students directly interface with industry leaders and actively engage in dialogue with their peers and the leader.
