Call to participate in the Calgary Youth Science Fair

Volunteer opportunities

The Calgary Youth Science Fair (CYSF) is coming up! It continues to be the largest of its kind in Canada and this partnership provides a wonderful opportunity for the University to support science students, education, and innovation.

As ever, the University is sponsoring several awards and will be hosting the main event on April 21st and 22 at the Olympic Oval. The Calgary Youth Science Fair is an excellent (and FUN!) opportunity to integrate the academic community with the broader Calgary community and to connect with young learners. Here are some ways you can get involved:

·         First, the CYSF needs volunteer judges! Each year, several hundred Calgarians volunteer to judge the Calgary Youth Science Fair. Without these volunteers, the fair would not be possible. If you’re interested in this role, please register here. If you would like to learn more about being at judge at the CYSF, please see here. Judges need to be 19 years or older or attending a post-secondary institution and must be available on April 21st. Some judges will also be asked to be available for the second round (April 22 afternoon).

·         We are searching for three speakers at the graduate, post-graduate, and faculty or staff level to deliver a 15-minute speaking presentation during the lunch-hour on April 21st.  Ideally these presentations would focus on inspiring students to pursue a future in Science as well as promote post-secondary education.

·         Finally, we are offering a few lucky schools the chance to enter to win a classroom visit from a UCalgary scholar who would ideally deliver an interactive and/or engaging presentation about their work to a classroom of young thinkers.

If you or someone you know is interested in delivering a noon-hour talk or Classroom visit, please e-mail Rukhsaar Daya (rukhsaar.daya@ucalgary.ca) by the end of Day February 15th.

Please feel free to share and promote! Together, we will encourage and nurture the next generation of scientists, leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs. Please reach out to Rukhsaar Daya if you have any questions.

Dates: April 20 – 22.
