AuroraMAX camera broadcasting another season of northern lights

An aurora observatory in the Canadian North is once again bringing the brilliance of the northern lights into homes around the world in real time.

The University of Calgary’s AuroraMAX resumed broadcasting the aurora borealis live from a high-definition camera set up in Yellowknife, N.W.T., earlier this month.

“The camera does not operate during the summer months (May to August) since the nights are too bright to see auroras during this period,” noted a post on the AuroraMAX website.

The camera, which started up again on Aug. 16, turns on automatically each night as the sun sets up North. If the sky is clear, the northern lights can be seen on the live feed.

AuroraMax started in 2009 and was originally planned for five years. It continued after it became extremely popular and now has more than 38,000 followers on X, formerly Twitter.

The project shows the beauty of the northern lights, but also raises awareness of the science behind the aurora, and how solar activity affects our daily lives.
