Arts Employer and Student of the Year Awards
The Arts Employer and Student of the Year Awards is an annual event hosted by the University of Calgary, Faculty of Arts Co-op program to celebrate the successes of employer supervisors and co-op students. This year, the awards took place virtually on Jan. 26, 2021 and acknowledged the impressive students and employers of 2020. A recording of the Awards is shared on the Arts Co-op website, and can be found here.
Twenty-four students and twenty-two submitted nomination forms were reviewed by a panel of seven impartial and diverse judges consisting of employers, student and staff.
"I feel extremely lucky to be part of the students’ experience and see them become confident and competent professionals” – Amanda Foley, Co-op Employer Winner
Dr. Dawn Johnston presented the awards in the following categories: External Large Organizations (500+ employees), External Small/Medium Organizations (1-499 employees), and Internal/On-Campus departments.
"One of the best things about co-op is that as you are working, you really can see how things apply to future professionally and also to your studies as well.” – Rory Phillips, Co-op Student Winner
The co-operative education (Co-op) program at the UCalgary is a work-integrated learning program to enhance student learning by helping them gain degree-related work experience. After an acknowledgement of the hard work of the students and supervisors in this especially challenging past year, the winners and honorable mentions were announced by Dr. Johnston. Each winner had a few moments to speak and all mentioned the societal and economic impacts of the COVID pandemic on their organization and the student’s experience, how the co-op student displayed resilience and flexibility, and that the co-op program in general enabled both the supervisors and students to learn from each other and grow in professional and personal life.
“A huge thank you to Inter-Pipeline... They have given me so many opportunities and I have loved every minute of it, even if it is virtual.” – Brooke Kenyon, Co-op Student Honorable Mention
