Academic Integrity Week raises awareness of the ethics of academic life

UCalgary Library partners with Student Success Centre and Taylor Institute to engage students and faculty in conversation about academic integrity

If you've taken a final exam at UCalgary, you've probably gotten a clear 'academic integrity' bag to put your valuables in. But what is academic integrity and why does it matter?

According to the International Centre for Academic Integrity, it is a commitment to six fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage. Put simply, it is honest and responsible scholarship to maintain the integrity of academic accomplishments.

As a campus community, we all play a part in upholding academic integrity. That's why the Library is partnering with the Student Success Centre and Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning on a series of events during Academic Integrity Week (Oct 16-20). These events are intended to engage students, professors, TAs and staff in deeper conversation about academic integrity.

Throughout a student's university experience, they'll likely encounter instances where their academic integrity is tested, whether during group work, online classes, final exams, completing research or more. It's important to be knowledgeable of what constitutes academic integrity in order to have a rewarding learning experience, uphold ethical learning practices and avoid academic misconduct situations.

Academic dishonesty's effects extend beyond individual actions. It impedes learning, belittles the meaning of higher education and affects the reputation of the program and institution.
