The Cumming School of Medicine is mourning the loss of professor emeritus Dr. Melville Kerr, MD, who passed away on Jan. 25, 2020, at St. Columba’s Hospice in Edinburgh.

In 1977, Melville became the chairman of the Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Calgary’s medical school and head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Foothills Hospital. In 1986, he went on to become the director of UCalgary’s Division of International Development within the university’s International Centre.

Melville dedicated his career to helping develop evidence-based health care and will be remembered for his interest in international education. He spent much of his time in Nepal and the Philippines, and strongly believed that there are many mutual benefits to the international partnerships that exist within the health sector.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at Warriston Crematorium, Cloister Chapel, in Edinburgh.
